This little portrait sketch took me about 20 minutes to rough out. About half life size and in buff crank clay it's been hollowed out and cured ready for firing!

J.Hunnicut Portrait

I had the first sitting with John today, it lasted about an hour and it's coming along well. After taking some initial photographs and measurements, for later reference - I blocked up the armature and started sketching out the basic features. Looking forward to the next sitting, I think ill get this fired and mounted when it's finished.

With the opening show set to start at 6pm sharp, the participating artists were busy adding the  finishing touches to their installations and refreshments for guests on Thursday. As soon as the doors opened a steady stream of onlookers filled the gallery space and by 6.30 it was almost at full capacity! Thanks for such a great turnout and to all artists who were involved putting on this exhibition.

Patina

Experimenting with a hand painted patina on some plaster torsos, really pleased with the weathered bronze look. Going to get these put on bases and up for sale soon!

Night Classes

Really making some progress with this portrait, this is my first attempt at a lifesize bust.

Mesh portrait

Experimenting with wire & mesh, this ultra fine mesh was pressed over a concrete cast of a face.

Torso Casting Day 5

This was the final day of the casting process. The keyed edge of the first half of the plaster jacket was coated liberally with clay slip and the final plaster jacket was added, embedded with hessian scrim. After leaving for 2hrs I used a hammer and chisel to carefully separate the halves of the mould and remove the original clay torso. Using a rasp I filed down any rough or protruding edges. The mould is now ready to reproduce plaster or jesmonite casts!

Torso Casting Day 4

I placed the whole sculpture on its side and using a teaspoon and scooped out register keys on the first half of the plaster jacket. Then built up a clay wall angled inward and mixed 300mls of silicone & 10% reacting agent, applying as before.

Torso Casting Day 3

After the final layer of silicone set I built up a further clay wall approx 1 inch on the existing wall, not perforated this time. Also an edger of about 1cm around the whole thing to act as a lip when applying the plaster jacket. Plaster was then mixed and applied in several coats and embedded with strips of hessian for strength, forming the first half of the plaster jacket.

Torso Casting Day 2

Applied a further coating of approx 300 mls silicone and a further 10% reacting agent. This was liberally applied, making sure to strengthen any shallow areas. I used a bush in liquid soap to smooth over the final surface in preparation for the plaster jacket.
In the background is a small replacement angel mould using the same method. The previous mould was exhausted last year.

Torso Casting Day 1

Today I stated the casting process of the torso at the Glasgow School of Art. Building up a series of clay walls perforated with key registers and dovetail joints at the base. This is the first step before applying the primary coating of silicone to this half of the sculpture.

started work on this female torso about a week ago, recently returned to it I am determined to get it finished and cast soon. I really like how it's turning out!
